🎵 A new experiment in Songcraft — Nothingness: Yet I Choose What I Become
This one has been an interesting journey.
I wanted to explore something musically adventurous, bringing together Alternative Rock, Art Pop and cinematic progressive elements, while giving the instruments room to contribute their own character to the arrangement.
The song itself explores ego, identity, humility and the freedom of becoming. But the production became an experiment in its own right.
I developed the musical direction using my Song Flow Advanced Tool, part of my Songcraft development work at Prompt-Lee.
The brief went well beyond choosing a genre. I worked with a specific chord progression, harmonic direction, instrumental roles, vocal variations, dynamics and section-by-section arrangement.
Electric piano, contrasting guitars, 12-string, vibraphone, pedal steel, oboe and bass trombone all had their own place in the sound.
And then there was the vocoder!
I initially intended it for selected sections, but Suno had other ideas. It began appearing in unexpected places. Rather than continually fighting the generation, I decided to let that random influence become part of the experiment. Eventually, I found a version where the effect balanced beautifully with the more natural vocal character.
That’s part of what I find interesting about working with Suno. The prompt establishes an intention, but the generation can introduce something unexpected. Sometimes the challenge is not to correct it, but to recognise when it has given you something worth keeping.
The Song Flow Advanced Tool is about developing that creative intention before handing it to the generator. It gives me a way to think through the composition rather than simply throwing genre descriptions at Suno and hoping for the best.
I’d be interested to hear what others in the Suno and prompt-writing communities think of the result, particularly the arrangement, vocal treatments and use of the vocoder.
Have a listen, and let me know what you think!
